STAKE FEATURE OF LATOKIA PROGRAM GOES

Carman Secures T. Koerncr's Services.
< iuciunati. Xovcni I mt 3 . — Cool and cheerless
weather confronted race suers at I^ttuuia this after-
boon. hot Hie attendance was belter than expected
aiul the volume of s|M‘culuti<>ii surprisingly large,
ijie Jailer item exceeding that of any former day
ihis week. 'Ilic Laurel Stakes, at three-quarters,
and a handicap at one mile, fur t wo-year-olds. were
Ute chief offerings and probably weie the magnets
that attracted unexpectedly generous attendance,
'the stake race resulted disappointingly. Prince Gal.
considered as a likely «*ontcnder la-fure the race,
was tlie direct cause. Though only four "started in
Ho- ra«v. he was virtually left at the post, and
then eis-trified the onlookers by making a sensa-
tional Idd for the purse. The winner turned up in
All IJed. the extreme outsider, which beat Melisande
a neck. Torn Hayward, under a hard ride, outstayed
Prince Gal fur third place. The latter was much the
I tent. and with an equal sendoff would have won.
John \V. Schorr took down his almost daily purse
when Star Charter landed the handicap over Sidney
II. Incidentally the colt impressed the crowd by
tie- manlier in which lie shouldered his 118 pounds.
The closing rata* was run in semi-darkness, smoke
from switch engines in the rear of the track and a
gray mist precluding accuracy of visitat. Henry
Hutchison led Imprudent, tin* favorite, all the way
ami won by a comfortable margin.
The limit iiumltcr of starters went to the post in
the first two dashes, conditioned for maiden two-
year-olds. Itotli resulted in upsets, the purses ladng
■akett l*y horses groiqicti witli the licitl. Barney
S.-hreiltcr’s Hu Hois accounted for the first and Hen-
derson & Hogan's V. Powers took the second.
H«tii slowed distinct improvement in form over pre-
' ions starts. Third Rail, winner of the third race,
was another to develop good sihssI during the aft-
ernoon. He led liis company all the way.
T<*day '* arrivals includctl Ha rncy Scbreiber and
James I.. Holland, president of tlie I»s Angeles
Haring Association. Mrs. Holland accompanied Mr.
Holland. They will remain here several days before
proceeding to New York.
Jockey T. nice, who r*<de Prince Gail, stated that
the Istrse was unprepared for the break, causing hint
to I** practically left. He was straight when the
barrier was released.
Melisande seems to he going liack judging bv her
performance of this afternoon. Sin* tired badly after
at display of high speed for the tirst half mile.
Edward 4as|tor. assistant secretary of the Juarez
track, will leave for El Paso on Sunday next to
aissist in tlie preliminaries attending the opening of
the Mexican track.
S. M. Henderson, who is the senior member of
Henderson A- Hogan, was among today's visitors.
The bulk of their ra«*ers are still resting at Churchill
1 towns awaiting final plans of their owners for ship-
ment. It is more than likely that the string wilt
1 m* split into two sections and sent to Juarez and
Oakland. While here Mr. Henderson disposed of
bis contract call on Jockey T. Koemer to R. K. Car-
mnii. Tin* contract runs to November ir> and tlie
rider will pilot all of Mr. Carman’s liorsos in races
in which they arc engaged lteginuing with Saturday.
Mr. Carman did not care to interfere with tlie
ruling engagements Koeracr had made for tomorrow.
Jockeys T. Hicc and J. Howard were each sus-
IH-ndcd for live days by the starter for disobedience
at the ]Mist in til * seeoud race.
The three- horse winning combination, consisting
of All lied. Star Cliarter and Ilcury Hutchison, paid
its lucky barkers $206 for $2. Tlie two-liorsc
combination. Hu Ihiis and V. Powers, returned
$1 1MS..V* for each *2 invested.

BOOSTING FOR SUCCESS AT JAMESTOWN.
People of Norfolk Displaying Lively Concern for
Permanency of the Sport.
Norfolk. Va.. November 3.— Mud runners had an
Mining at the Jamestown track this afternoon. The
going was heavy close to the inner rail, hut in fairly
good condition on the outside. Tin* racing conditions
were such as lo make the s|Mirt inviting only to the
hardened regulars.. Tlie weather was raw and cold
and dark, heavy clouds hung over the course all
afternoon. Considering these disagreeable fca'ures,
:1 m* attendance was excellent and it certainly looks
::s if meetings here can be made to pay. The Nor-
folk people are taking kindly to tlie s|K>rt anil every-
one is boosting. There was nothing attractive about
the card offered this afternoon, ordinary horses being
named to go in all of the rases. A majority of the
finishes found l ho Winners first home by long margins
and their victories were evidently anticipated in most
eases, as strong end unnatural sttpisirt developed.
Despite the fact that tin* six favorites wen* beaten,
it is doubtful if the layers found tlie balance on
t lie afternoon's business on the right side of the
ledger. In the steeplechase the winner, Essex II..
was backed from 8 to 1 to 3 to 1. Tlie horse won in
a canter tiy five lengths. Expansionist, the favorite,
was a distant trailer until the race was practically
over. The showing of this lair so was a keen disap-
pointment to form players, who will eagerly watch
iiis future races. The first and sixtli races were
the only two in which the winners were forced to
stand a drive.
Dross Parade II. came hack after his victory of
yesterday, and. after making all of bis own pace,
lasted to lieat Laughing Eyes a neek. In the closing
race Gay Deceiver, favored by good racing hick,
lieat Captain Swanson a scant length. Tltc latter
was sharply cut off on the turn out of the hack-
strcicli or the result might have l>oen different.
Several rulings were announced by the judges this
afternoon, one of which brought indefinite suspension
to jockey Leiliert for his handling of Koyal Onyx
yesterday. Loilicrt declared that the horse was cold
under him and declared that he would never mu a
good race unless he was stimulated. Jockey Mc-
Cabe was also told not to accept any further mounts
at the meeting. His ride on the two-.vear-old. Perth-
shire. was not satisfactory. It was tlie intention
of the officials to siis|H>nd C. C. Hull also, but after
the latter apologized to starter Dade tlu* matter was
1 1 lowed to drop.
William P. Kiggs. who is acting as one of tilt-
stewards. arrived from Baltimore this morning and
will remain for the rest of (lie meeting.
William Garth lias purchased the two-yea r-oM."

her.

MEDIANT ENTERS THE STUD.
Norfolk. Va.. November 3. — Herman B. Duryea.
who is here for awhile before proceeding to his
estate in Tennessee for the winter, reports that his
stable In France consists of fourteen coming two-
year-olds. most of them American-bred sons aud
daughters of Adam. Broomstick and Irish Lad. These
youngsters are established at his private training
place iu Normandy, where they have a track seveu-
cigliths of a mile around over which to gallop.
There are several captivating lookers in this
bunch, but bow fast they can ran or what they
will do next year their owner has no idea because
they have not been thoroughly tried.
Mediant, the daughter of Meddler and Ballantrac,
with which Mr. Duryea won the Great Eastern
Handicap of 1908 at Sheepsliead Bay and the Stew-
ards' Cup at Goodwood, is out of training. Mediant
was mated with Ziufandel in England last spring.
She will drop her foal at the Duryea place in
France next spring, and it will be eligible to run in
all French races.
Irish Lad is at Mr. Duryea’s French establishment
with some fifteen splendidly-bred American mares,
several of which boro the Duryea colors when they
raced in this country. Mr. Duryea is putting the
produce of these mares ill the great English classics.
Mr. Duryea is hoping that Mediant's Zinfandcl
foai may Is- a colt. If he is he will be named for
the Epsom Derby. Mediant has a warm place in
the affections of the lluryeas. and they are anxious
to have her do well at the stud. She liedt a good
lot when she won the Great Eastern of 1908, and
she Is-at the shiftiest sprinters in England when
she won the Stewards’ Cup of 1909.
Dreamer and Belfast, which represent the extent
of Mr. Duryea's racing string in this country, will
winter willi trainer J. Simon Ilealy’s string at
Cap:. E. II. Cassatt’s Chest orhrook Farm in Pennsyl-
vania. Captain Cassatt, by tile way. will next year
race the biggest string he ever campaigned and
llealy will handle his horses.
